First Lady Patricia's Program to Fund Cleft Lip and Palate Care

Submitted by administrator on August 6, 2008 - 6:02pm.

It is traditional for the First Lady of the Shriners of North America to host a fundraising program to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

First Lady Patricia Maxwell's fundraising program, “Two Hearts Combined...Children and the Shrine," will benefit the cleft lip and palate treatment program at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

In 2005, in response to the needs of the thousands of children who are born each year with deformities of the upper lip and mouth, Shriners Hospitals added cleft lip and palate as an official care discipline.

Treating cleft lip and palate often requires several types of surgeries, including lip and palate repair, nasal reconstruction, facial work and dental procedures. Children with this condition also need additional care and attention such as speech therapy, psychosocial evaluations and orthodontic treatment.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is establishing programs that will fill the need for coordinated, comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for children with cleft lip and palate, as well as provide opportunities for additional medical research on the condition. Donations to First Lady Patricia's program will help in the continued expansion of this important effort.
